Migraines

Headaches from hell

Migraines occur in about one tenth of the population and are about three times more common among women than men. Children as young as three can get them and most sufferers have their first migraine by the time they are 20. They also tend to run in families.

There are two types of migraine

COMMON MIGRAINE

Pain develops slowly, eventually becoming unbearable and aggravated by any movement or noise. Often, the pain develops only on one side of the head. Nausea and vomiting are also common.

CLASSICAL MIGRAINE

Less common, it is preceded by a visual disturbance, also known as “aura.” Severe, one-sided headache with nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity. Also may cause weakness, tingling on one side of the body.

MIGRAINE “TRIGGERS”

Several factors, called “triggers” are associated with the onset of migraine, in four main areas:
✓ Physical and/or emotional stress, such as heat or cold, exercise, anger or worry.
✓ Foods such as chocolate, wine, dairy products or certain fruits.
✓ Sensory stimuli such as loud noise, bright or flashing lights and strong smells.
✓ Menstruation or other hormone changes, including the use of birth control pills.
