Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Treating BPH

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH, can cause a man urinary problems. It is usually the result of an enlarged prostate gland and an increase in the smooth muscle tone in the prostate and bladder neck. Both can restrict urine flow by squeezing the urethra, which empties urine from the bladder.

The goal of all BPH treatment is to remove these restrictions. Surgical procedures usually reach the area by an instrument inserted through the penis; it removes, cuts or compresses prostatic tissue to unblock the urethra. Drug treatments are aimed at relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck, slowing progression of the disease, or both.
