Migraine with aura
Migraine with aura
Auras are visual and sensory experiences that typically precede migraine headaches. Visual and sensory auras are gradually progressive, reaching maximum development in about 20 minutes and lasting for 20 to 50 minutes. The headache usually follows about 20 minutes after the auras, but this too varies from immediate headaches to several hours later.
Auras are specific to the individual and tend to follow the same pattern. Here is a fairly typical migraine with aura, as described by one young woman:
It began with a visual disturbance in her left eye, flowing outward from her central to her peripheral vision, which lasted about 60 minutes. Fifteen minutes after the beginning of this visual aura, she developed a migraine on the right side of her head. Thirty minutes after the migraine started and while the visual aura was still present, the sensory aura began with a tingling sensation in her left hand. It progressed to the arm, body, leg, foot, face and tongue, lasting 60 minutes, weakening her left side and impairing her speech.
1 Episode begins Visual disturbance of left eye
2 Migraine begins on right side of head
3 Left hand begins to tingle
4 Entire arm tingles
5 Left side weakened shoulder to foot
6 Left side of face affected, speech slurred
